What Is Activated Charcoal?
Charcoal is known for its sticky property called adsorption. This property is enhanced in activated charcoal which is produced by heating naturally carbon-rich materials such as coconut, bamboo or wood at high temperatures. The process increases the charcoal’s surface area and creates small pores in the carbon, making it more adsorbing and, therefore, ideal for trapping toxins. The cosmetic industry has found this property of activated charcoal useful in removing toxins from the skin. Man Arden 7X Activated Charcoal Face Wash contains Coconut Activated Charcoal.
How Man Arden 7X Activated Charcoal Face Wash Benefits Your Skin?
Every ingredient used in Man Arden 7X Activated Charcoal Face Wash has been scientifically proven to benefit the skin in different ways. Let us analyze each one separately:
1. Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal sticks to bacteria, toxins, dirt and micro-particles to cleanse your skin and give you a healthy complexion. In a scientific study, activated charcoal was used with lemon extract and green tea (which are also found in this product) to form a cleansing, anti-acne and skin nourishing gel. The results were positive and the gel displayed easy washability and no skin irritation. An earlier study conducted on sixty patients also points at the efficacy of activated charcoal on chronic wounds. It found that activated charcoal “may help remove fluids and toxins” in management of chronic wounds.
2. Vitamin B3
Vitamin B3 is also called Niacin or Niacinamide. It is a water soluble vitamin that has been scientifically proven to improve facial skin appearance. In a study conducted on 50 subjects, it was found that the topical application of Vitamin B3 led to “reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, (reduction in) hyperpigmented spots, red blotchiness and skin sallowness (skin yellowing)”. Another study confirms the anti-wrinkle effects of Vitamin B3 after 8 weeks of cosmetic use.
3. Pro-Vitamin B5
Pro-Vitamin B5, also called panthenol, has skin-moisturizing quality that is confirmed by scientific research. Two studies, conducted on healthy adults, found a significant increase in skin hydration following single and prolonged topical use of the emollient containing panthenol. More studies point towards barrier restoration potential of Pro-Vitamin B5. Our skin has a barrier function which protects it from harmful external environment. In two studies conducted on 43 individuals, it was found that the topical emollient containing panthenol “has favourable and lasting effects on barrier function”.
4. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals in the skin and thereby prevents premature aging. Clinical studies support the topical use of Vitamin C for the skin damaged by prolonged exposure to the sun. Research shows that cosmeceuticals containing Vitamin C promote “photo-protection from ultraviolet A and B” and lighten hyperpigmentation, leading to a bright skin.
5. Vitamin E Acetate
Vitamin E Acetate, also called Alpha tocopheryl acetate, is a form of Vitamin E with higher stability. Being an antioxidant, it protects cell membranes from damage by oxygen-free radicals . Experimental evidence also suggests that Vitamin E has “photoprotective and skin-barrier stabilizing properties.” Moreover both Vitamin C and Vitamin E work synergistically together to inhibit the acute ultraviolet damage, sunburn or tanning.
The Icy Cool Menthol in Man Arden 7X Activated Charcoal Face Wash produces a cooling sensation on the facial skin. But that is not it. Menthol also produces increase in cutaneous blood flow, leading to a glowing skin complexion . Studies show that menthol application on the skin has a positive effect on the sweating rate.
7. Tea Tree Oil
Man Arden 7X Activated Charcoal Face Wash also contains Tea Tree Oil which has been scientifically proven to be effective on mild to moderate acne. In a randomized clinical trial conducted on 60 patients with acne, Tea Tree Oil gel was found to be “3.55 times and 5.75 times more effective than placebo.”
8. Roman Chamomile Oil
Roman Chamomile oil has both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that promote smooth and healthy skin. Scientific studies point towards the efficacy of Roman Chamomile oil in various skin conditions . Research confirms that Roman Chamomile oil does have the smooth muscle relaxant effect.
9. Lemon Extract
Lemon Extract contains citric acid which can be helpful in a skin condition like acne. A study shows that the peel of lemon is a potent astringent and a good microbial agent. It can help in keeping a good and healthy skin.
10. Licorice Extract
The extract of licorice displays antioxidant activity by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are toxic byproducts harmful to our skin . Evidence indicates that topical licorice extract “may improve skin rash symptoms such as redness, swelling and itching”.
11. Sugar Cane Extract
Sugar Cane extract contains glycolic acid which penetrates skin easily. This property makes it an effective peel agent in removing dead skin cells and dirt that can clog skin pores and cause acne. In short, glycolic acid has “anti-inflammatory, keratolytic, and antioxidant effects.” Studies also show that glycolic acid is effective against sunburnt skin.
12. Green Tea Leaf Extract
Green Tea Leaf extract contains antioxidants called polyphenols which keep free radicals in check to give you a smooth, glowing skin. In a study conducted on 24 volunteers, it was found that the topical application of green tea extract increased skin moisture and also reduced skin roughness.
13. Goji Fruit Extract
Goji Fruit extract, also called Lycium Barbarum, is traditionally used for skin health, and now even scientific research points towards its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities. A study reveals the effectiveness of Goji solution in skin smoothening.
